Copán

One of the Maya world’s artistic high points — intricately carved stelae and the famous Hieroglyphic Stairway (UNESCO).

Copán was a small Maya kingdom that produced some of the civilization’s finest art: deeply carved stelae, portrait sculptures, and the Hieroglyphic Stairway — the longest Maya text ever found, climbing a temple in over 2,000 glyphs.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site near the Guatemala border, it’s the artistic counterpoint to Tikal’s scale, and well worth the detour.
