As the route turns south, California’s Highway 1 hugs the cliffs through Big Sur and beyond — one of the great coastal drives anywhere, with the Pacific on one side the whole way down.

It’s the transition stretch: the cold and the gravel of the north behind us, the desert and the border ahead.
