Built by Rossmonster

In November 2024 our Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 144 AWD rolled out of Rossmonster — a custom, four-season, off-grid build designed from the start for a journey this long.

Solar and a lithium bank, an indoor galley and fresh water, diesel heat, a fixed bed over a gear garage, and all-terrain tires with a rear-mounted spare. Everything chosen to be lived in for three years and fixed on the road.

The full build tour is right here — and this is where we’ll log the upgrades we make before April 2028.

Power and water that last

The whole build is organized around being able to stop anywhere and stay. Roof solar feeds a lithium house bank big enough to run the lights, the fridge, the water pump, and our laptops for days without a hookup or the engine.

A fresh-water system and an indoor galley mean the cooking and the washing-up happen inside, out of the weather — which matters a lot more in an Arctic gravel pullout or a Patagonian gale than it does in a campground.

Built to be lived in — and fixed on the road

A fixed bed sits over a gear garage, so bikes, recovery boards, tools, and spares ride low and out of the way while the living space stays usable all day. Diesel heat keeps it honest in winter; insulation keeps it bearable in the desert.

Just as important: the systems are chosen to be understood and repaired in a yard in Oaxaca or a campsite in Bolivia, not just at a dealership. Simple, serviceable, and stocked with spares before we leave the U.S.

Highlights

  • Four-season insulation and diesel heat
  • Off-grid solar + lithium, good for days unplugged
  • Indoor galley and fresh-water system
  • Fixed bed over a gear garage; AWD on all-terrain tires with a rear spare
