The Panama Canal

Watch ships rise and fall through the Miraflores locks on the waterway that splits the continent.

One of the engineering wonders of the world, the Panama Canal lifts ships 26 m over the continental divide and back down, joining two oceans. From the Miraflores visitor centre you can watch giant vessels squeeze through the locks.

For us it’s also symbolic: the last great sight of North America before the road runs out at the Darién.
